12-3-13

Continuing with the First Law Trilogy theme, here's Inquisitor Sand Dan Glokta:

I had a lot of fun with this, partly because he's pretty much the polar opposite of Logen (both in terms of character and the design), and partly because I've found a new technique for drawing characters quickly and cleanly:

Get the design down quick with a rough greyscale sketch, then move in with a detailed line drawing. Color overlays on top, then just work and refine things. Figure out all the issues with proportion and pose early, so everything after is merely a matter of cleaning up.

Just for fun, here's a jig I made to do some color correction on the coat:

Map time!

After dozens of iterations, I'm pretty pleased with this. Some more tweaking will be done, but this is the bones of it.

Here's a little peek into my process:

I keep a Miller-Projected map of the actual right next to it to help keep things as realistic as possible and scaled interestingly.

Still environmentin' :

Looking at it now it would appear that the platform the lighthouse is sitting on is waaaay out of proportion but whatevs.

10-29-12 The Second

Worked on Ringil some more:

Referenced the text this time around, re-remembered that he's a southpaw and that the scar runs along the jaw.

10-29-12

Finished Octavia Guerrero, head of the Free People's Union:

Also did a quick sketch of Ringil Eskiath, from Richard K. Morgan's noir-fantasy novel The Cold Commands :

Looking at it now, he's not nearly grizzled enough and he's also missing a facial scar or two, but considering I banged this out in less than an hour, I'm pretty pleased overall with the results.

4-22-12

Since it seems as though I am physically, mentally, and emotionally incapable of sticking to one project for any length of time, here's some fantasy stuff:

Dude on the left is your standard infantryman, magic sword and six-shooter loaded with all manner of spells. You know, chillin'. Dude on the right is more of a grenadier, carrying a combat accordion-tuba that plays magic spells...

THIS ALL MAKES SENSE IN-WORLD.
